ATTENDANCE POLICY AND PROCEDURES
PARENT VERIFICATION
Parents should notify the attendance office on the day of an absence.  The attendance office will record the status of each absence (verified or unverified).  If no contact by the parent is made, a computerized “home caller” will contact the home by phone each evening informing the parents of any absence accrued by their student during that day.
FIRST PERIOD RE-ADMITTANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS:
Students should arrive at school early on the day of their return from an absence and obtain a re-admit from the attendance office.  The re-admit slip will be marked either verified or unverified depending on whether or not parents have made contact with the office.
The attendance office will issue a detention for students who arrive late to school without a valid excuse from a parent or guardian.

TRUANCIES
Full-day absences will be verified by attendance personnel.  Students who are unable to verify absences within 48 hours will be considered truant.  Students with un-cleared full-day absences will be assigned a Saturday School and/or referred to the Assistant Principal.
Habitual truants and their parents will be referred to the district Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) for severe disciplinary action, which could include legal prosecution and monetary fines.

PARENT/STUDENT NOTIFICATIONS
1.  The curriculum letter from each teacher will explain the policy of class participation to the parent and student.
2.  Progress Reports will be issued by the teacher and marked “below average” and “absences affecting grade” when absences total five or more (verified or unverified) from any class.
3.  At six and 12 absences (verified or unverified), the student and parent will receive a letter from the district and Assistant Principal.  The student may be placed on an “Attendance Contract.”
4.  At the point where the student’s absences prevent him/her from passing the class, the teacher may issue a referral to the Assistant Principal.  The Assistant Principal will decide if removal from the class or alternative education placement is necessary and possible.
The Attendance Contract must precede the referral.
TARDY AND CLASS CUT POLICIES
Student absences are classified as cuts when that student has attended school for part of the day, but has been absent from one or more classes without the permission of his/her parents or school officials.  The following progressive actions will be taken for students who are tardy or fail to attend scheduled classes without permission.

MAGNOLIA H.S. ELECTRONIC DEVICE POLICY
Electronic devices and especially cell phones are a major problem on school campuses across the country.  Ringing cell phones are disruptive during class time.  Camera phones and text messaging are used to cheat on quizzes and tests.  Electronics are stolen by other students.  Electronics such as cells and MP3’s are loaned to other students and may be lost or broken.  Cell phones have exacerbated crises situations because students have called parents and caused undue fear and apprehension and have reported conflicting information.  In these situations student safety is compromised.  The use of all electronic devices at school is detrimental to the academic climate because it takes valuable time away from instruction and creates disciplinary problems. Cell phones are among the most STOLEN items on campus.  The time spent investigating stolen electronic devices is enormous and disruptive.
The school will NOT INVESTIGATE STOLEN ELECTRONIC DEVICES.   The security is the sole responsibility of the student.
All cell phones AND musical devices must be turned off and kept in backpacks.  They must not be visible.  Students may not use their cell phones and music devices between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and the final bell at the end of the day.  (Using a cell phone as a clock or calculator is not an excuse to have it out.)  Electronics that “fall” out of pockets or backpacks will be confiscated. If a student is caught using a cell phone (any of its functions) or any electronic device for any reason during the restricted time, the following consequences will be imposed:
v      Devices will be confiscated and given to the student’s AP
v      The electronic device will be returned only to the parent of the student.
v      Students who have electronic devices confiscated more than 2 times will be placed on a behavior contract and suspended from school for one day for continued defiance.
We realize that having to pick up a student’s electronic device may be inconvenient.  We recommend you discuss this policy with your student in order to avoid this problem.  We also ask you to keep in mind that the use of electronic devices are not only disruptive in class, they are an inconvenience to teachers and staff who must stop what they are doing to correct the problem, label the device and be responsible for their safe keeping.
Magnolia High School is not responsible for, and will not investigate, electronic devices that are broken, lost, or stolen.  If a parent needs to contact a student during school hours,he/she may leave a message in the office.  The message will be delivered to the student.  Students may contact parents through the attendance office.
