Courses Offered:
1804 Reading Improvement 9th - 12th 10-20 Semester Credits (5 credits per semester) Prerequisite: Students reading below 4th grade reading level on district reading assessment and/or students scoring below the 36th percentile on the state standardized test or teacher recommendation (Reading Level 1).
Reading Improvement focuses on decoding, vocabulary, and comprehension skills to promote reading fluency, competency, and enjoyment. Reading strategies are taught and developed to enhance student achievement. The development of speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills is emphasized.
1809 Comprehensive Reading 9th- 12th 10-20 Semester Credits (5 credits per semester) Prerequisite: Students scoring between 4.0 and 8.0 reading level on district reading assessment and/or below the 50th percentile on the standardized test or teacher recommendation (Reading Level 2).
Comprehensive Reading focuses on increased reading fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and test-taking skills. Emphasis is placed upon critical, analytical, and expository reading. Instructional strategies support content area reading and foster independent life-long reading habits.
Magnolia is excited to offer a new program in several of our Reading Improvement sections: Read 180. Read 180 is a program created by Scholastic. It consists of three components: Computer program, small group sessions, and independent reading with audio books and other novels. We are in our second year of this new program, and are very excited about the possibilities for student growth and improvement.
1955 English Language Development (ELD) Reading 9th- 12th 5 or 10 elective semester credits per year Prerequisites: Students who have scored three and more years below grade level on district-approved assessment or teacher recommendation
This course focuses on reading skills including a variety of instructional strategies with a focus on helping students achieve success in reading and academics as evidenced by improved assessment scores and overall student performance. This course is designed to increase students' reading comprehension, extend and enrich vocabulary, and raise their reading level. This course chould be taken concurrently with an appropriate language arts class.
